Ode to the Ritz

A faint whisper of powder comes across your nose. It’s notes are distinguished, mature and opulent. Light billows through oversized windows gilded in gold hardware, dancing as if it were flirting with the smoke of a candle.  The sound of Ella Fitzgerald plays as you become lost in a dream. This is the Ritz.

As co-host of the Hearts aFlutter Tour, I spend a month each year in France. This year I had the pleasure of spending two nights at the Ritz and the experience changed my life.  My vow is to live "La Vie En Rose" all my days and bring the elegance, sophistication and comfort of the Ritz home with me.  For those of you longing to bring the magic of Paris into your home, here are a few suggestions, along with a few watercolors I painted in homage to the iconic hotel.

1.  Wall paneling on all walls & creme colored paints.

2. Elegant window treatments with tassels.

3. Bed canopies and crown moulding throughout.

5. Gold hardware & fixtures

6.  A distinct scent, specifically the Ritz Amber scent.

7. Elegant Lighting, and when in doubt, a chandelier.

8. Vintage prints, portraits and pressed flowers on the walls.

9. Monogrammed pillows for your guests.

10. Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Holiday always.

11. Have a chilled rose on hand at all times for guests.

12. Choose quality over quantity.

13. Open the windows and plant a garden, even if its just a flower box in your window.

An Afternoon in Swaziland

Last December, I had the pleasure of showing my dear friend Kim around my birthplace, Swaziland, a small country in Southern Africa. We stopped by Malandelas, a restaurant in Malkerns that shares the property of House on Fire, an artist community and concert space. My hope was to build a table that embodied the beauty of Swaziland, each component representing a different aspect of Swazi life. As a lush mountainous country, the landscape is picturesque. Swazi people are beautiful, kind and happy. Their genuine joy is infectious, almost perfectly matched by the colorful native flowers that bloom in Summer.

The oil lamp style lanterns represent the heavy use of candlelight and oil lanterns in many Swazi homes without electricity. The woven placemats represent the important of grass in Swazi culture. From grass roofs, to grass mats to sit on, grass is an integral part of traditional Swazi life. The chairs ere woven by a local man using local grasses as well.  The glasses were filled with Sebebe beer, the national beer of Swaziland. The gold flatware represented the rich mineral content of the soil. To represent the bountiful red soil I chose Ricoterres handmade terra-cotta candle holders.

With the exception of the beautiful vibrant bougainvillea, our entire table was made from native flowers and grasses we foraged at Milwane. Fruits such as lychee and Papaya are popular and commonly grown in Swazi households. We displayed them in woven baskets commonly made by Grandmothers.

The Swazi meal made by Malandelas represents the most cherished Swazi foods. Corn is a main staple of Swazi diet and it dried and ground into a meal made into a thick porridge like substance called “pap.” This is used to dip into the oxtail soup, with cooked greens and colorful potatoes on the side. The bright "peri-peri" sauce gives it all a kick!

Joy Proctor for Bella Belle 2018

For my 2018 Joy Proctor for Bella Belle Collection, I was inspired by old world elegance paired with modern lines. Looking to the quality of the past, I chose to highlight embroidery in each of the three designs, using a neutral linen base and floral embroidery motif for each. The Lavender flat reflects my own personal favorite shoe style of choice, an elegant flat with a fun bow. I chose a "V" opening for the toe, which is felt gave the a feet a beautiful moment of sexiness. The Orchid is an elegant yet glam choice that added the luxe of a gold heel, while being a very comfortable choice for any wedding. And who wouldn't want to walk on gold?  The Peony is a truly sexy bootie with low cut outs on either side, an elegant stiletto heel and beautiful peep toe to show off your toes.
